Note:
Vermeer had to watch his pennies as he was not a wealthy man. Because
he used a limited palette when painting this portrait, it has a
freshness and directness that is self evident. His original technique
was to use a glaze extensively, rather than a direct application of
colour, which was necessary for me as I have time restraints that did
not worry Vermeer. His output was usually about 2 paintings a year,
mostly of a small size. With an output this small he could take his
time glazing, to get the effect he wanted.
The reason for the depth in the coat is because I did not have an available canvas of the right size.
